FALL 2008 NEWS: Important Notice: We are very pleased to announce that the James Rose Center has been successful in obtaining the variance we sought from the Ridgewood Board of Adjustment! (See “Important Notice” in the Spring 2008 News below.) Many thanks to our attorney, David Rutherford, and to the parade of witnesses who testified on our behalf, including former interns, Eric Brightman and Katherine Kokoska; Ridgewood Historic Commission chair, Art Wrubel; Rutgers Landscape Architecture chair, JeanMarie Hartman; Ridgewood teachers, Michael Yannone and Samantha Stankiewicz; Anne Zusy of the Ridgewood Women Gardners and others. There is little doubt our presentation helped to educate the Board regarding the historic, cultural and educational significance of the Center to the local community, the state and the nation. We are grateful to the Board of Adjustment for its constructive engagement of the issues involved and for their unanimous (7-0) vote in favor of the variance. While this process resulted in the loss of an entire season of educational and outreach programs, we believe its long term benefits will far outweigh this loss. We are energized by the prospect of a revitalized reopening in the Spring of 2008 with new and reinvigorated preservation, education and outreach programs. As we have had to turn down many requests to visit the Center this Summer, we wish to make the Center available to visitors this Fall and will be having Open Days on Thursday, September 25 and Tuesday, October 7, including guided tours with Professor Dean Cardasis at 10 AM and 1 PM. Please plan to visit then, if you’re able. A couple of additional Open Days may be scheduled. Please check the website for notices. We may still be able to accommodate a few larger group tours this Fall, so please call to arrange one if you’re interested. We will also be having our Annual Fall Cleanup on Saturday, November 8. Please RSVP if you’d like to volunteer (director@jamesrosecenter.org.). |

SPRING 2008 NEWS: Important Notice: The James Rose Center has been officially notified by the Village of Ridgewood that our activities are in violation of the town’s zoning ordinance and that we must cease to offer any tours, lectures, internships or educational programs of any kind at the Center. We will continue to offer our student scholarships, document modern landscape architecture and conduct research from an off-site location, while we appeal the Village’s action. The Board of the Center believes that preserving this internationally-recognized work of environmental art depends upon providing public access to it and continuing its use for public education and service. We further believe that such activities enhance, rather than jeopardize the residential zone in which the center lies. Our appeal to the Village should have a hearing with the Ridgewood Board of Adjustment in late Spring of 2008. We believe this is an opportunity to demonstrate the merits of the center as a community resource and are hopeful of a positive outcome, so that we may continue to preserve and use this historic designed environment to serve students, scholars and the general public soon thereafter. Meanwhile, of course, we are complying with the Village’s order. If you are interested in visiting the center or participating in any of our programs, or if you have any questions regarding the status of our appeal to the Village, please write to director@jamesrosecenter.org or call 210. 446. 6017 for an update. |

Phase I of the Bear’s Nest exemplifies the imaginative responsiveness to existing conditions and strong inside/outside spatial relations that are characteristic of the work of both Petterson and Rose. Tree Falls on Roof Garden: A strong localized storm caused an 80 foot tree to fall on the Roof Garden at the James Rose Center. While the roof survived intact, the Roof Garden was damaged and required extensive repairs. For the most part these have been made, and the Northern section of the roof garden should be reconstructed by the end of May. Preservation Efforts at the Center: Current preservation projects include completion of rehabilitation of the Buddha Garden, rebuilding the “pole arrangement” fence, and repair of the delicate woven fences on the northern side of the property. |
