Introduction to Shodo: Japanese Calligraphy

  • The James Rose Center 506 East Ridgewood Avenue Ridgewood, NJ, 07450 United States (map)

Shodo — often translated as "the way of writing" — is one of Japan's most enduring art forms. More than a writing technique, it is a practice of presence: each stroke made with intention, each character emerging from stillness.

In this introductory workshop, instructor Denri Takai will guide participants through the fundamentals of brush calligraphy — from proper posture and grip to the fluid, deliberate strokes that give shodo its distinctive character. No prior experience is needed. All materials are provided, and every participant leaves with their own completed works to take home.

This is a rare opportunity to try something genuinely beautiful in a setting that feels made for it.

Space is limited. Registration required.
